Design of a New Type Phase Shifting Array with Dual Radiating Modes

This paper introduces a novel approach that integrates the radiating behaviors of reflectarrays and transmitarrays together. A new type dual-mode phase shifting array is applied for validation, which consists of split-diagonal-cross unit cells and a polarizing grid. The horizontal and vertical polarized incident waves are separated into reflecting and transmitting modes due to the grid. Accordingly, one can easily switch the array between the forward and backward radiating modes individually. This simple solution could be potential as the increasing requirement of high integration in modern communications.
