Network operations and management issues for transparent WDM networks

This paper addresses network management and operations issues for WDM networks. New WDM components, such as the optical spectrum analyzer, P(/spl lambda/), inexpensive WDM multiplexers with flat passband, and optical amplifiers with uniform gain, will be important technologies to enable cost effective and robust operation of WDM networks.
