Comparative gas sensing analysis of green and chemically reduced graphene oxide

2019
The current study reports the comparison of green (L-Ascorbic acid) and chemically (hydrazine hydrate) reduced graphene oxide (RGO) for NO2 chemiresistive gas sensor. The reduction process of graphene oxide (GO) involves removing oxygen-containing functional groups to form a highly reduced RGO having a large surface area and high adsorption capacity, which makes it very efficient for gas sensing applications. Very few comparison studies were carried out on gas sensing performance based on an eco-friendly non-toxic green approach and chemically effective method used for GO reduction. RGO reduced with hydrazine hydrate (RGOH) has exhibited better sensitivity (80%), low response time (4s), and recovery time (7s) as contemplated to green reductant L-AA (RGOA). However, based on economic viability and environmentally safe preparation method, RGOA can be utilized for gas sensing application in place of RGOH, despite 10% lower gas sensing performance compared with RGOH.
