When restricted to interstitial inflammation, acute pancreatitis is curable by medical treatment, even in severe cases. Necrotizing pancreatitis, however, when it involves larger parts of the pancreas and invades the retroperitoneal tissue, leads to progressive complications and is associated with a high risk of local infection and generalized sepsis.
