Extended X-ray emission from the radio galaxy 3C 390.3
2002
We report on Chandra ACIS observations of the radio galaxy 3C 390.3 which reveals spatially extended X-ray emission from the northern and the southern hotspot regions. We compare the complex X-ray morphology of the hotspot regions with their radio morphology. We argue that Synchrotron emission from electrons accelerated by the highly non-stationary and non-uniform plasma naturally accounts for the observed X-ray emission and radio to X-ray energy spectra. We discuss the implications for the dynamics of the jet fluid and particle acceleration processes.
