TERMINAL ISLAND TURNAROUND

2001
The Pier T marine terminal at the Port of Long Beach is a new 375-acre (152 ha) container terminal being developed at the former Long Beach Naval Station and Naval Shipyard. The $525-million development project includes the demolition of an extensive list of upland and in-water facilities, import of fill material, site grading, and construction of new terminal facilities. The port is dredging the approach channel and berthing areas to a 50 ft (15 m) depth, constructing a 20 ac (8 ha) landfill to widen a peninsula for an intermodal rail yard, and building a 5,000 ft (1,524 m) long deep-draft concrete wharf.
