The invention relates to a multi-functional control element for motor vehicles with an alphanumeric input and display unit, wherein the input unit comprises an at least drehbetatigbares operating element, select jack over which shown on the display unit alphanumeric characters or symbols, and are convertible to a character or group of functions. In order to achieve with a multi-functional operating element of this kind a better handling during erase operations, the invention proposes that a separate erasure key is provided to lift the respectively last selected or standing at the last position character.
