in my intellectual development the figure of George Santayana loomed large on the philosophical horizon. As an undergraduate I read his Life of Reason under the tutelage of Morris R. Cohen, who used it as a text of sorts in one of his courses. Cohens admiration for Santayana was surprisingly unqualified, and the felicity with which Santayana expressed his insights made most of us devotees of his inspired
