Aus einer Kernforschungsanlage wird ein Forschungszentrum: Rückbau der Nuklearbereiche der Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH

2003
Today's Forschungszentrum Julich GmbH, the Julich Research Center, was founded in the 1950s as an important research facility for the development of nuclear power for German industry. Among other installations, two research reactors, FRJ-1 and FRJ-2, and the AVR high-temperature reactor were built on the premises of KFA. The broad range of associated research constituted a fruitful research community around the nuclear core activities. The nuclear programs have been, or will soon be, phased out, except for the use of isotopes in medicine and continued operation of the FRJ-2 research reactor as a neutron source. Project management of decommissioning and demolition of the facilities no longer in use has been assigned to the central infrastructure unit in order to guarantee an economically viable and safe completion of these activities. Since mid-1997, all decommissioning projects and waste management facilities have been run under the same management. The broad range of different decommissioning and demolition projects implies complicated and demanding work for the project engineers and their teams.
