REPAIR OF CATHODIC PROTECTION SYSTEMS

2004
Corrosion of steel reinforcements can compromise structural integrity, since corrosion causes expansion which, in turn, causes cracking, delamination, spalling, leakage, and deterioration. Parking structures are especially susceptible to corrosion because they are exposed to high amounts of chloride from road salts. The presence of chlorides in concrete leads to electrochemical reaction. Cathodic protection can help mitigate this problem. With Cathodic protection, corrosion is reduced through the application of cathodic current, which brings the metal closer to an immune state.
