Stabilized red phosphorus and its production

1991
PURPOSE: To improve the oxidizing stability of powder red phosphorus by coating the surface of red phosphorus particle of a particle size smaller than a specific value with an epoxy resin and additionally coating it with a sensitivity downgrading agent. CONSTITUTION: The water emulsion of an epoxy resin (native liquid epoxy resin of a bisphenol A type with density of 1.16 g/cm 3 , an epoxy equivalent weight of 180 to 192 and dynamic viscosity at 23°C of about 14 Pa. s, e.g.), is introduced and stirred into the water suspension of red phosphorus with a particle size of 2 mm in maximum or a solution obtained by dissolving the epoxy resin is introduced and stirred into a water miscible solvent (acetone, e.g.), adjusted to pH 4 to 9 and stirred for 0.5 to 3 hours at 40 to 80°C. Next, in order to make 5 to 0.2 pts.wt. epoxy resin and 2 to 0.05 pts.wt. di-2-ethylhexy phthalate (sensitivity downgrading agent), the water emulsion of the phthalate is added to 93 to 99.75 pts.wt. red phosphorus to be stirred for 0.5 to 3 hours at 20 to 90°C, then filtered and dried at 80 to 120°C in a gaseous nitrogen stream to obtain the stabilized red phosphorus.
