Effect and Study of Supersonic Plume Impingement on Axis Symmetric Jet Deflector by Simulation

Missile launcher is being provided with Jet Deflector (JD) for protecting Launcher from hot plume of missile and diverting the plume away from launcher and preventing debris and gravels hitting launcher. Design of JD is required to be carried out by keeping extreme condition of direct plume impingement at high temperature and velocity. The JD surface is coated with heat resistant coating. Hence, there is a need to estimate thermal load and erosion rate on JD. The thickness of coating over JD is important to understand the number of missile firing that can be done on same location of JD. Simulations were carried out to estimate heat flux on JD surface and to estimate surface erosion. Simulation will reduce the cost incurred for testing of missile over JD. Maximum cold wall heat flux obtained by simulation is 44MW/m2 and erosion depth is 7.1 mm and in experimental is 6.5 mm.
