An access-aware framework for Video-on-Demand system

2015
The increased in demand for multimedia delivery coupled with the advancement of optical network technologies has spurred interest in developing an efficient streaming solutions. New user behavior interest in services beyond voice has prompted service operators to improve on how to package their services more attractively, i.e. looking for ways to efficiently add value to their proprietary services, such as Video-on-Demand (VoD). This paper proposed an access-aware framework which adopts: (1) an index for quantifying videos' popularity, and (2) a layered streaming scheme; to efficiently manage network resources by adapting to the subscriber's viewing behavior throughout the video session, especially when the said subscriber departs early the streaming session. Analysis results show that the proposed access-aware framework, which adapts to the momentary browsing behavior of a subscriber, reduces the network resources consumption during peak hours.
