Investigations on Monitoring Sensor Usage and Decision-Making: A Case Study in an Elderly Care Facility

2020
This paper discusses the usage of a robotic monitoring device and decision-making by staffers at a care facility. The target monitoring device is a commercial product (Silhouette Monitoring Sensor, King Tsushin Kogyo Co., Ltd.) that monitors a person on a bed through silhouette images. We conducted research at a care facility before and after it started using the monitoring device, and recorded device operations and alert outputs over a three-month period. We conducted interviews in meetings to understand the decision-making processes of the staff. Through these interviews and by studying data logs on the device we detected changes in the usage of the device and leaned the reason for the changes.
