Setting the Unsettled: An Introduction to 9/11 and the Academy

This chapter serves as an introduction to the book and the relationship between 9/11 and the academy. It first places the liberal arts within the historical context of higher education in the United States from the late nineteenth century through the aftermath of the 1960s. After considering questions relating to rupture and historical change over time, this chapter discusses five themes and charts the impact of 9/11 across the interdisciplinary social sciences and humanities.
