INVESTIGATION OF MOISTURE SUSCEPTIBILITY OF RECYCLED ASPHALT PAVEMENT (RAP) THROUGH LABORATORY AGING SIMULATION

2001
The purpose of this study was to examine some of the effects of water treatment on specific mixtures of unaged and laboratory aged asphalts with a suite of aggregates. Of particular interest was the influence of water on the adsorption of polar organic constituents of asphalts. The mixtures with aged asphalts simulated pavement mixtures that may be utilized as recycled asphalt pavements. Fairly large aggregate particles were used in these experiments to minimize surface areas. The goal was to gain some understanding of the role of polar organics in moisture damage and of the mechanism by which water causes debonding.
