Faunal and tool distribution in the layers of petralona cave

The presence of Microtus, Lagurus and Pliomys (along with other microfaunal data) confirms an age for the Petralonian Archanthropus of Lower Pleistocene—older than previously thought. This age is also confirmed by the carnivores. The presence of tools increases from the 16th layer onwards.
