Optical pumping of neutron deficient 187Hg

Abstract An experimental technique for polarizing mass separated isotopes far from stability by means of optical pumping is reported. It has been used to determine nuclear moments, and volume from the atomic spectrum. Results for 187 Hg are I = 3 2 , μ = (0.58±0.03) nm , Q ≈ - lb, IS (187−;198, λ = 2537 A ) ≈ 22 GHz .
