The MTM-EBG: A Fully Uniplanar, Printable, and Embedded Solution for Multi-Band Functionality in Microstrip Devices and Antennas

2019
This work reviews applications of the recently developed metamaterial-based electromagnetic bandgap structure (MTM-EBG) to provide multi-band behavior in printed microwave circuit devices. Developed rigorously using multiconductor transmission line theory, the MTM-EBG is well-modeled, uniplanar, and can be embedded directly into existing microstrip structures, making it suitable for a variety of devices. The theory of operation is discussed and a summary of recently developed MTM-EBG-based multi-band devices is presented, with relevant results compiled for each. The included multi-band structures range from modified microstrip circuit devices to patch antennas, which demonstrate the versatility and broad applicability of the MTM-EBG.
