The second National Family Health Survey (NFHS-2) was conducted during 1998-99 covering a representative sample of 90000 eligible women aged 15-49 from 26 states that comprise more than 99% of Indias population. The survey provides state-level estimates of demographic and health parameters as well as data on various socioeconomic and programmatic factors that are critical for bringing about desired changes in the countrys demographic and health situation. The survey also provides urban and rural estimates for most states regional estimates for four states separate estimates for three metro cities and estimates for slum areas in Mumbai. The assigned field staff Centre for Development Studies in Hyderabad collected information from 6749 households and interviewed 6941 eligible women in these households. Information on 2837 children born to eligible women in the 3 years preceding the survey were collected. The height and weight of eligible women and young children were measured and blood samples were taken to assess the prevalence of anemia. The survey asked women about their participation in household decision-making and collected information on selected lifestyle indicators for household members. Moreover NFHS-2 provided estimates of infant and child mortality and factors associated with the survival of young children.
