All the 283 hospitalized children divided into two groups, as mentioned, underwent IL-6 190 C/T gene polymorphism testing, measurement of some anthropometric parameters (MUAC-mid-upper arm circumference and TSTtricipital skinfold thickness), and biochemical evaluation (protein, albumin). Results: It was found that CT heterozygotes were more frequent in the malnutrition group for the IL-6 190 gene (p = 0.003). In our group of children with malnutrition, BMI, MUAC, TST and low serum albumin levels correlated with CT genotype of IL-6 190 gene, whereas the TT genotype of these gene was a protective factor for malnutrition (p = 0.0001). Conclusion: IL-6 190 TT genotype seem to have a protective function for malnutrition; further studies are needed to clarify the role of these polymorphisms in child malnutrition.
