A Dynamic Model For The Chemistry OfManganese At River Eume

1970
A dynamic model of the behaviour of Manganese species (Mn%+ and MnO%) along a river has been developed and tested with real data. The model follows the same approach to the problem as other well established models like MASAS (Ulrich et al. [1]). The one-box model adopted here reproduces the kinetics of the various processes involved in the sedimentation and dissolving of Mn species: oxidation and reduction, interface transport and sedimentation, combined with flow terms. The model has been applied to the simulation of the Mn chemical behaviour along the River Eume, from As Pontes Power Plant (main source of Mn) to a dam, 20km below. Historical data over two years were used for validation purposes and, though no flow modeling was considered (as it corresponds to a one-box model), the results of the dynamic model agree to the Mn%+ measurements at the dam outlet; as a conclusion, the dynamic model developed can be used to simulate the future Mn concentration at the river for different conditions.
