Evaluation of anti inflammatory activity of Indigofera aspalathoides Vahl in Swiss albino mice

2013
Abstract Background The objective of this study was to evaluate the anti inflammatory activity of Indigofera aspalathoides in Swiss albino mice. Methods The anti inflammatory activity was evaluated by carrageenan induced paw edema model. Biochemical parameters such as Serum Glutamate Oxaloacetate Transaminase (SGOT), Serum Glutamate Pyruvate Transaminase (SGPT) and ESR counting were studied. High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) analysis was performed to identify the bioactive compounds present in I .aspalathoides . Results The acute toxicity (LD 50 value) of the Extract I. aspalathoides (EIA) was standardized as 250 mg/kg in orally treated mice. EIA found to have significant anti inflammatory activity in carrageenan induced paw edema compared to standard Indomethacin. It was evidenced by remarkable reduction in serum lysosomal enzymes and ESR as compared with control. HPLC chromatogram revealed the presence of five different bio active compounds in EIA. Conclusion The result strongly suggested that I. aspalathoides has potent anti inflammatory property.
