ANISOTROPY OF THE MOSSBAUER EFFECT IN $beta$-Sn SINGLE CRYSTALS

1962
The probability for resonance absorption, f', of 23.8-kev gamma -quanta was measured in single crystal plates of white metallic tin cut out along various crystallographic planes. A large anisotropy of the effect was observed which did not change upon transition from a temperatare of 293 to 77 deg K. The following ratio of the quantittes f' in various plates was observed: f'/sub 100/: f'/sub 101/: f'/sub 001/: f'/sub polycrys./ = 1 : 0.9 Differences In the positions of the absorption peaks and an asymmetry of the absorption lines have been found which can be explained by quadrupole aplitting of the Sn/sup 119/ nuclear level in the BETA -Sn crystal.
