First Successful use of Indigenously Designed Miniaturized Extracorporeal Circuit in India

2011
There are enormous studies discussing about the systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) which is similar to sepsis, triggered by conventional cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Aetiological factors include surgical trauma, reperfusion injury, and, most importantly, contact of the blood with the synthetic surfaces of the CPB circuit. Considering these issues, Miniaturized-Extracorporeal Circulation (MECC), has been developed recently and has shown promising early results in terms of reducing this inflammatory response. We report the first successful Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG), under normothermia, using indigenously designed MECC (IMECC) in our centre, in a patient with acute myocardial infarction (MI).
