Stable second-order nonlinear optical waveguide with interpenetrating polymer network

1996
ABSTRACTThe electro-optic (EO ) properties of stable second-order nonlinear optical waveguide with interpenetratingpolymer network (TPN) was reported. The two-side leaky mode method for measuring EO coefficients of IPNfilms was presented. The relationships between EO coefficients and waveguide synchronous angle changescaused by applied voltage were derived. The measured values of EO coefficients of IPN are reported. Keywords : electro-opticcoefficients ; interpenetrating polymer network ; waveguide1. INTRODUCTION The film of organic or polymeric materials with large second—order opticalnonlinearities have been devel-oped because of their potential use in communication and optical signal processingEl]. Various guest-host s- tems and poling techniques have been developed. Either physical doping or chemical bonding of the chro- mophores to the polymer backbone can be used , but the latter , with a cross-linked polymer structure , ispreferred because it provides for high densities of optically nonlinear groups and better system stability. We re-port here the preparation of IPN film, the two-side leaky mode method for measuring EO coefficients of IPNfilm and some of the experimental results of IPN waveguide.
