••• Eighty-eight Japanese patients having a first myocardial infarction before age 60 years were eligible for the study. All patients were admitted to the coronary care unit of Matsuyama Red Cross Hospital, and the diagnosis of myocardial infarction was established according to World Health Organization criteria. We excluded patients who had died of myocardial infarction or other causes because their blood samples were not available. One hundred control subjects were recruited from among outpatients or medical staff who were matched with case patients for age and sex, but who had no documented history of vascular disease including ischemic heart disease and cerebrovascular
