Water Resources Management for Rural Development Using Streamflow Model of Imo River at Umuopara

2014
Streamflow model of Imo River at Umuopara a rural community is developed using statistical method of least squares. The study presents the mathematical model of annual maximum discharge versus annual maximum stage of Imo River at Umuopara. The calculated statistical measures such as coefficient of correlation (r), coefficient of determination (r 2) ) and stan- dard error of estimate SQ.h suggest that the model satisfactorily produced a good curve fitting to be used for the model. The model represents the nonlinear relationship between annual maximum discharge and annual maximum stage. The model developed will serve a useful purpose in the design of dam, estimation of the size of reservoir, public water supply, flood control, pisciculture, recreation, irrigation, wild life protection, hydropower, water sports and tourism in Umuopara community and beyond thus ushering in an era of socio-economic and industrial development for the area.
