Signs in Nuclear Medicine

1170 Purpose: Nuclear medicine scans involve imaging of different organ systems with specific radiopharmaceutical. Pattern recognition and identification of some diagnostic signs allow for a confident diagnosis. Many of these patterns are acknowledged by specific names. This pictorial review highlights the most common as well as uncommon diagnostic signs in daily Nuclear medicine work flow. Methods: Organ based imaging findings with reference to a known diagnostic sign were collected. A pictorial review of these diagnostic scans and its correlative imaging where ever available are presented. Results: Bone scan: Bull horn sign, Mickey mouse sign, Helmet sign, Cold hip sign, Doughnut sign, Super scan, Hot patella sign, Honda sign, Tram line sign, Seat belt sign, striped tie sign, Stocking glove sign, String of pearls, Abe Lincoln sign, Butterfly sign, Deltoid sign, Double density sign, The "501 " sign, Sickle sign Thyroid scan: Owl’s eye sign, Hockey stick sign. Doughnut signVQ scan: Checkboard sign, Stripe sign, Fissure sign, Hot quadrate sign MPI/MUGA scan: Mohaved sign, Tear drop sign, Black hole sign, Hurricane sign, trumpet sign HIDA scan: Rim sign, Nubbin sign, Krishnamurthy-Bobba sign, Tail sign, Murphy sign. Reappearing Liver sign, Liver scan sign Liver scan: Dimple sign. Renal scan: Hour glass sign, Cobra sign. Brain scan: Hot nose sign, Hollow skull sign, Posterior Cingulate sign, Cingulate island sign. Scrotal scan: Lady bug sign, Bull’s eye sign, Halo sign Ga-67 scan: Panda sign, Lambda sign. FDG scan: Hot clot sign (FDGoma), Hot forearm sign, Iodine scan: Helmet sign, Handkerchief sign, Star artefact. Conclusions: Familiarity with these important signs, aids in better understanding the underlying pathophysiology and improving diagnostic accuracy.
