Marketing potential of EV's charging flexibility using a distribution grid automation system

2017
The electrification of the mobility sector is a key issue for achieving the European climate goals. However, a massive increase of electric vehicles (EVs) leads to a significantly higher utilization of the power grid which may results in overloads or deviations from the allowed voltage range. In order to avoid those inadmissible grid conditions, the charging process of EVs is a useful flexibility option and therefore predestined to be controlled by a charging management system. Since the use of such a system is not limited to grid supporting applications which are usually only required for a few hours a year, it enables the use of the EV's charging flexibility for additional market applications most of the time. In this paper these different market applications are compared economically. To this end, the applicable charging flexibility of EVs and its optimal use at the different markets is outlined.
