Investigation of anorectal motility

2020
Abstract Disorders of defecation and the pelvic floor affect around 10–15% of the population and are a problem commonly encountered by both gastroenterologists and GI surgeons alike. They require a comprehensive approach both with initial clinical examination and subsequent investigation, utilizing a range of both functional tests and imaging modalities, both of which are constantly evolving. This chapter will cover both the practical approach to anorectal motility investigation as well as its interpretation. This will include functional tests such as manometry and barostat recording as well as traditional imaging techniques using X-ray and newer MRI techniques.
