Means (300) for controlling the temperature of a warm bore of a superconducting magnet in a magnetic resonance imaging apparatus (MRI apparatus) includes a plurality of thermal warm bore sensors (320) positioned on a surface of the warm bore, and a plurality of heating elements (324) which are positioned on the surface of the warm bore. A thermal heating element sensor (326) is coupled to each of the plurality of heating elements (324) and arranged to monitor the temperature of the associated heating elements (324). A control device (322) with the plurality of thermal sensors warm bore (320) and coupled to the plurality of thermal heating element sensors (326). The control device (322) is adapted to control each of the plurality of heating elements (320) to maintain a predetermined temperature of the warm bore.
