A Novel Remote VRLA Battery Capacity Check Scheme for Transformer Substation

This paper concerns the problem of threatening the safety of personnel and wasting hours of work when the VRLA battery pack used in the DC power system for the transformer substation is doing capacity check, a novel remote VRLA battery pack capacity check scheme is proposed. By using a bi-directional AC/DC charger to replace the traditional rectifier charger, it is possible to check the battery capacity, and complete the function of charging and discharging the battery pack. In addition, a control strategy adapted to the novel remote battery pack capacity check scheme is proposed. It can stabilize the discharge current of the battery pack, and the extra discharge energy can be incorporated into the power grid without wasting. More critically, It has a strong accident response capability. This scheme is applicable to various voltage level DC power supply systems with VRLA batteries as reserve power supply.
