Brain Injury and the Haemostatic System

Progressive haemorrhage is a feared complication to different kinds of brain injuries, e.g. traumatic brain injury (TBI), spontaneous intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) and subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH). The evidence supporting any treatment option aiming at preventing or stopping progressive haemorrhage is weak. There is low-grade support for correcting abnormalities of the coagulation system, such as prolonged prothrombin time (PT) and thrombocytopenia after TBI and ICH. Other recommendations miss supporting evidence.
