Earthquake damage and loss estimation through geographic information systems

1996
Seismic zonation through realistic earthquake damage and loss estimation is essential for risk mitigation efforts and emergency preparedness. A geographic information system (GIS) provides an ideal tool for conducting seismic hazard and risk studies for large regions. This paper describes the development and example implementation of a GIS-based damage and loss estimation methodology.
