Fragilité : impact sur la prise en charge des fractures de l'extrémité supérieure du fémur Frailty: its impact on the treatment of fractures of the upper section of the femur

2012
Frailty is a state whereby the reserves of an elderly person are very much depleted. Fracture of the upper section of the femur is a serious occurrence that affects numerous frail, elderly patients. Identification of the signs of frailty before the fracture occurs, such as postural instability, nutritional deficiency (macro and micronutrients), reduction in locomotor capacity and brittle bones, is a fundamental approach in trying to anticipate a fracture occurring. After the fracture occurs, it is the management of all other elements of frailty slowing down the healing and functional recovery, such as malnutrition or an episode of confusion, that is strategically significant. This article details the strong links between the Frailty phenotype and this type of event, as one of the indicators of this geriatric characteristic.
