Scholar and Colleague: Homage to Carl Sauer

When this series of lectures in memory of Carl Sauer was planned, it was my understanding that the lectures were to deal with matters included within the broad range of his scholarly interests. I am not competent to speak about any of these matters. I accepted the invitation to deliver the first lecture of the series with the understanding that I should speak of Sauer only within the limits of my competence; that is, only in general terms. Such a discussion may, however, not be wholly out of place, as an introduction to later lectures composed more in accordance with the stated intention of the series.
