Molecular light scattering by clathrate-like structures in the water-2-butanol-acetone system
2003
Integral molecular light scattering by the water-sec-butanol-acetone ternary system was studied. The concentration of acetone was constant (0.02 mole fractions), and the concentration of sec-butanol was varied up to 0.04 mole fractions. A maximum light scattering coefficient was observed for the ternary system at x = 0.015 mole fractions of sec-butanol. An analysis of ultrasound velocity measurements and adiabatic compressibility calculations performed by various authors and a comparison of these results with the experimental molecular light scattering data on the ternary system led us to conclude that the observed phenomenon was caused by the formation of clathrate-like structures in mixtures with a high content of water.
