Recent progress in 3D-printed polymeric scaffolds for bone tissue engineering

2020
Abstract In this chapter, the application of 3D bioprinting methods of inkjet-based bioprinting, extrusion-based bioprinting, and laser-assisted bioprinting for bone tissue engineering is reviewed. The success of this application is based on the bespoke geometries that are endowed by the high fidelity and computer-aided 3D bioprinting technologies. In this chapter, scaffolds from biopolymers from both natural and synthetic classes and composites have been highlighted. These scaffolds have been discussed with regard to their ability to cater for mechanical strength, evoke porosity, and allow for acceptable cell adhesion. Nonetheless, challenges faced for the design of optimized scaffolds are still unmet. Future development would encompass hybrid 3D printing processes for the biofabrication of next generation of 3D-printed polymeric scaffolds for bone tissue engineering.
