Real merits of the wind wave model with an optimized source function

2007
By means of modification of the wind wave model WAM (Cycle-4), a series of numerical experiments was carried out for verification of a new source function proposed earlier [1]. Verification was done on the basis of comparison of the results of wave simulation for a given wind field with the buoy observation data obtained in three oceanic regions. Estimations of simulation accuracy were obtained for a series of wind wave parameters, and their comparison for original and modified model WAM is accomplished. Superiority of the modified model was revealed: an enhancement of speed of calculation by 20‐25% and an decrease of rootmean-square simulation errors by 1.5‐2 times for the significant wave height H s and the mean period T m . The results obtained fix the fact of creation of the scientific basis for construction of a Russian national model of a new generation. All modern numerical models for wind waves are based on the solution of the evolution equation for 2D wave spectrum S ( k , x , t ) given in the space of wave vectors k and spread through the geographic coordinates x and time t . In general, this equation has the form
