measurementsofSingh9 for thecaseof an accelerating ow,whereas in Fig. 4 the measurements of Tabatabai and Pollard for the decelerating  ow are presented. It is clear that, in both cases, the present solution provides a reasonable approximation. It is also fair to say that the same degree of approximation to the accelerating  ow can also be achieved via the Ž nite differences, primitive variable, solution of Singh.9 The latter method, however, involves the axisymmetric case of the Navier–Stokes equations and includes the effects of turbulence via the k– e model.
