The preparation and characterization of the phases formed by the reactions of nickel and lanthanum nitrates with magnesium aluminate

Abstract Samples of Ni(II) on MgAl 2 O 4 and of Ni(II) and La(III) on MgAl 2 O 4 were prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction, temperature programmed reduction, and magnetic susceptibility. The results are consistent with the octahedral site preference of Ni(II) in the spinel phase. The role of lanthanum is discussed in terms of the formation of a perovskite-phase LaAlO 3 .
