Fragrance Profiles of Wild and Cultivated Roses

2016
In everyday life, scent plays an important role in many biological functions. Examples of particular functions are related to interactions between different organisms, but also within the same species, scent plays a role in attraction and repellence. Particularly in plants, which are bound to the same location due to their inability to move, defence against feeding insects and other animals is of paramount importance, as it is the attraction of pollinators and the dispersal of seeds, packaged in fragrant fruits. Flowers have been known for a long time to be sources of sweet fragrances. For centuries, roses have played an important role in human society. Their ornamental value was not merely a matter of flower shape and size: the abundance of flowering and their fragrance have attracted attention.
