Silencer for an exhaust system

2008
The invention relates to a silencer (1) for an at least partially double-flow exhaust system of an internal combustion engine, particularly a motor vehicle, having a housing (2) enclosing an interior space (3), with two prallel through which exhaust gas exhaust tubes (6) each by the interior (3) are passed and each within the housing (2) having a side opening (8), and with a neck member (9) connected to the two side apertures (8) of the exhaust pipes (6) to form a Helmholtz resonator connects serving as the resonance volume (12) interior space (3) of the housing (2) communicates. A particularly compact and inexpensive be built embodiment is obtained when the neck member (9) comprises two sheet-shaped longitudinal walls (11), applied respectively on the two exhaust pipes (6) and defining a neck volume (10) into which the side openings (8) of the open out exhaust pipes (6) and at the resonance volume (12) is open.
