A design ofahighperformance digital architecture foranonlinear imageenhancement technique ispresented inthis paper.The imageenhancement isbasedon illuminance- reflectance modelwhichimproves thevisual quality ofdigital imagesandvideocaptured underinsufficient ornon-uniform lighting conditions (1). Systolic, pipelined andparallel design techniques areutilized effectively intheproposed FPGA-based architectural designto achievereal-time performance. Estimation andfolding techniques areusedinthehardware algorithmic design toachieve faster, simpler andmoreefficient architecture. Thevideoenhancement systemisimplemented usingXilinx's multimedia development boardthatcontains a Virtexll-X2000 FPGA and it is capableof processing approximately 66Mega-pixels (Mpixels) persecond.
