(solvent used for reactions, extraction, and recrystallization in a wide array of reactions)
Alternate Name: methoxycyclopentane.
Physical Data: mp <−140 °C; bp 106 °C; d 0.86 g mL−1.
Solubility: soluble in alcohol, ether, and most organic solvents; insoluble in H2O.
Form Supplied in: clear colorless liquid; widely available.
Analysis of Reagent Purity: GC.
Preparative Method: methylation of cyclopentanol or addition of MeOH to cyclopentene.
Purification: fractionally distilled at 760 mmHg through a 70 mm Vigreux column. Avoid desiccation and overheating.
Handling, Storage, and Precautions: to help prevent autoxidation, store in dark, dry cool under nitrogen atmosphere. CPME should be used in a well-ventilated fume hood. Toxicity (oral) rat LD50: 1000–2000 mg kg−1. Incompatible with strong acids, strong bases, and oxidizing agents. May form explosive peroxides in the presence of air or sunlight.
