Forensic imaging of the living: A short stab at long distance

2013
Abstract The emergence of the sectional imaging modalities, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), has had a substantial impact on the mediolegal investigation of death. The “virtual autopsy” is gaining world-wide acceptance as a supplement to and, in some venues, a substitute for conventional autopsy. These modalities, especially CT, also have greatly expanded the usefulness of the radiological method in forensic investigation of the living in such areas as accident investigation and reconstruction and in evaluation and reconstruction of instances of accidental or inflicted trauma. This report of a criminal case of intentional stabbing illustrates the ability via radiological imaging to determine the extent of, and damage from, such a wound, and the influence this information may have on a jury. Additionally, an unusual method of exhibiting and explaining these findings at long distances is described.
