AN UNUSUAL CASE OF LOW-GRADE MYOFIBROBLASTIC SARCOMA OF THE TONGUE: CLINICAL AND PATHOLOGIC ASPECTS

Low-grade myofibroblastic sarcoma (LGMS) is a rare malignant mesenchymal neoplasm of myofibroblastic origin, affecting the head and neck region. Here we report the case of a 38-year-old woman who had a nodular and symptomatic lesion on the lateral border of the tongue. After the biopsy, the histopathologic analysis revealed a spindle cell lesion with fascicular and storiform pattern. The immunohistochemical analysis showed intense labeling for vimentin and smooth muscle actin, moderate labeling for calponin and S-100, and negative for several other markers. After diagnosis, the patient was referred to an oncology service for treatment. We emphasize the rarity of LGMS as a nodular lesion on the tongue and the need for accurate histologic and immunohistochemical characterization.
