TWO CASES OF INTESTINAL ENDOMETRIOSIS CAUSING INTESTINAL OBSTRUCTION AND APPENDICITIS

1996
We experienced a case of endometriosis of the ileum causing intestinal obstruction and a case of appendiceal endometriosis causing acute appendicitis. Case 1: A 46-uyear-old woman was seen at the hospital because of vomiting and abdominal pain suggestive of intestinal obustruction which repeatedly lasted for 2 years. Further examination showed the narrowed terminal portion of the ileum and ileocecal resection was performed. Case 2: A 44-year-old woman was seen at the hospital because of vomiting and abdominal pain. On laparotomy perforated appendicitis was found out. Appendectomy was performed. In both case 1 and 2 histological observation revealed endometrial tissue in the muscle layer of the intestine, a nd so diagnoses of endomtriosis of the ileum in case 1 and appendical endometriosis in case 2 were made. The intestinal endometriosis is rare. These have been 14 cases of endometriosis of the ileum and 11 cases of appendical endometriosis in Japan so far. This disease is difficult to differentiate from other diseases. We must be kept in mind as an underlying disease for abdominal complains in matured women.
