Comparison of experimental and numerical impact loads on ship-like sections

2007
Impact pressures, due to slamming, are of particular importance in assessing local and global structural strength. Knowledge of pressure distribution, experimental or numerical, in the forefoot and aftbody of a ship can be used in the evaluation of global wave-induced loads, e.g. whipping bending moment. Impact pressures for the cases of (i) a symmetric wedge impact and (ii) a bow section impact (both symmetric and asymmetric, i.e. section impacting upright and at an angle of roll) will be presented in this paper. The relevant impact loads are predicted using a range of 2D potential and viscous flow methods and compared with available experimental measurements for both cases.
